Dorrigo National Park is a lush, prehistoric-feeling slice of Gondwana rainforest in northern New South Wales. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, this park offers visitors a chance to walk among towering ancient trees, listen to the cacophony of birds and insects, and feel the spray of waterfalls in a cool, misty microclimate. It's a favourite stop for travellers driving between the coast and the New England Tablelands, providing a dramatic change of scenery from the Hunter Valley's vineyards.
Highlights & What to See
- The Skywalk – A 70-metre cantilevered walkway suspended over the rainforest canopy, offering breathtaking views of the Bellinger Valley and beyond. It's wheelchair-accessible and a perfect spot for sunrise or sunset.
- Crystal Shower Falls Walk – A 2.6 km loop that takes you behind a curtain of falling water. The short detour is worth it for the cool mist and the sound of water hitting the rocks.
- Never Never Rainforest Walk – A gentle 1.2 km boardwalk through ancient Antarctic beech and coachwood trees. It's an easy, immersive stroll suitable for all ages.
- Wollomombi Falls – Just outside the park, these are among the highest waterfalls in Australia, plunging 220 metres into a deep gorge. A short walk leads to several lookout points.
- Birdwatching – Dorrigo is a hotspot for birders, with species like the regent bowerbird, noisy pitta, and paradise riflebird. Bring binoculars and patience.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find that a full day is ideal to experience the park's highlights without rushing. Start early with the Skywalk at sunrise, then tackle the Crystal Shower Falls Walk mid-morning. After a picnic lunch (there are basic facilities at the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre), spend the afternoon on the Never Never Walk and a quick drive to Wollomombi Falls. If you're short on time, a half-day focused on the Skywalk and Crystal Shower Falls still provides a memorable taste of the rainforest.
