Stretching over 2,700 kilometres from the Queensland border to the Murray River, the Darling River Run is Australia’s most epic outback river journey. This iconic self-drive route follows the languid, red-brown waters of the Darling through remote sheep stations, ancient river red gums, and tiny outback pubs that seem frozen in time. It’s a trip for travellers who crave solitude, big skies, and the raw beauty of the Australian bush — expect dusty tracks, friendly locals, and a profound sense of remoteness.
Highlights & What to See
- Bourke – Start or finish in this historic river port, where the Darling was once crowded with paddle steamers. Visit the Back O’ Bourke Information Centre and take a sunset cruise on the river.
- Louth – Pop into the legendary Louth Pub, one of the most remote and character-filled pubs in NSW, famous for its annual goat race.
- Tilpa – Another classic outback pub, where the walls are plastered with travellers’ notes and the beer is ice-cold. Camp by the river under a blanket of stars.
- Wilcannia – Once a bustling river port, today it’s a place of haunting beauty. Check out the historic bridge and the restored 1880s gaol.
- Menindee Lakes – A series of shallow, bird-filled lakes that are a magnet for waterbirds and a stark contrast to the surrounding red dirt. Kinchega National Park offers excellent camping and wildlife spotting.
- Pooncarie – A tiny settlement with a historic cemetery and a great spot for fishing for Murray cod and yellowbelly.
- Wentworth – Where the Darling meets the Murray, this town marks the end of the run. Explore the old paddle steamers and the Perry Sandhills just outside town.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly soak up the Darling River Run, budget at least five to seven days. This allows for leisurely driving on unsealed roads (a 4WD is recommended, though a 2WD can manage in dry conditions), overnight stops at pubs or riverside camps, and time to explore side tracks to historic homesteads and billabongs. Many travellers combine it with a loop from Broken Hill or the Murray River for a two-week outback odyssey.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Mungo National Park – Home to the Walls of China and ancient Aboriginal burial sites, it’s a short detour from the run and a World Heritage-listed wonder.
- Murray River National Park – Continue south from Wentworth to explore the lower Murray’s wetlands, houseboats, and river red gum forests.
- Kinchega National Park – Adjacent to Menindee, this park offers historic shearing sheds, abundant birdlife, and a glimpse of early pastoral life.
- White Cliffs – An opal-mining town with underground homes, perfect for a quirky side trip from Wilcannia.
