Just an hour east of Melbourne, the Dandenong Ranges feel a world away. This lush, cool-climate escarpment is cloaked in towering mountain ash forests, fern gullies, and secret gardens. The air smells of damp earth and eucalyptus, and the views from the ridge stretch clear to the city skyline and the distant bay. It’s a place for slow wanders on foot, steam-train rides through the treetops, and cosy village cafés that seem to have stepped out of a storybook.
Highlights & What to See
- Puffing Billy Railway – Climb aboard this century-old steam train and dangle your legs over the side as it chugs through ferny forests and over timber trestle bridges. The stretch from Belgrave to Lakeside is the classic ride.
- Dandenong Ranges National Park – Follow the Sherbrooke Forest walk to spot lyrebirds scratching in the leaf litter, or tackle the 1000 Steps (Kokoda Memorial Walk) for a lung-busting climb through cool temperate rainforest.
- Mount Dandenong Observatory – On a clear day, the panorama from SkyHigh takes in the entire Melbourne cityscape, Port Phillip Bay, and even the You Yangs on the horizon. Come for sunset and stay for the twinkling city lights.
- Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens – A serene, English-style garden with a lake, waterfall, and rhododendrons that erupt in colour during spring. It’s a perfect picnic spot.
- Olinda & Sassafras villages – These higgledy-piggledy towns are packed with artisan bakeries, antique shops, and cosy tearooms. Try a Devonshire tea at the iconic Pie in the Sky or Miss Marple’s Tearoom.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can taste the Dandenongs in a day trip from Melbourne, but to truly soak up the atmosphere, spend a full day and night. Arrive mid-morning, ride Puffing Billy, explore a garden, then check into a guesthouse or B&B in Olinda. The next morning, do the 1000 Steps before the crowds and enjoy a long brunch in Sassafras. If you’re self-driving, the loop via Belgrave, Olinda, Mount Dandenong, and Sassafras is about 50 km and can be done in a relaxed half-day with stops.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Mornington Peninsula – A 90-minute drive south, this coastal playground has dramatic surf beaches, hot springs, and a string of wineries along the Mornington Peninsula Wine Route.
