Curving like a perfect scimitar into the Tasman Sea, Crescent Head is a sleepy surf village that feels a world away from the Hunter Valley wine country yet lies just two hours north of Sydney. Its name comes from the stunning crescent-shaped beach, backed by low-key holiday houses and a smattering of cafes. This is a place where the rhythm of the day is set by the swell — expect empty waves, coastal walks and a laid-back, barefoot vibe that’s pure Aussie coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Crescent Head Beach: A long, sweeping arc of sand that’s perfect for swimming, sunbaking and long walks. The northern end is a famous longboard break — watch the locals glide across peeling waves.
- Point Plomer & Goolawah National Park: A short drive north leads to a wild, dune-backed beach within a national park. Great for fishing, four-wheel driving and spotting sea eagles.
- Killick Creek: A tranquil estuary at the southern end of the beach, ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding and a calm swim with kids.
- Coastal Headland Walk: A stunning clifftop path from the surf club around to Gap Beach, offering panoramic views of the coastline and, in season, migrating whales.
- Local Produce & Markets: The village has a small but quality collection of cafes and bakeries. Don’t miss the weekend markets for local honey, macadamias and artisan bread.
Suggested Time to Spend
Crescent Head is a classic two- to three-day escape. One day is enough to explore the village and beach, but to truly unwind — surf, walk, read a book on the sand — give yourself at least a long weekend. Add an extra day if you plan to explore Point Plomer or the nearby national parks. It’s also an easy stopover for a night on a road trip between Sydney and Coffs Harbour.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Hunter Valley Wine Country: 2 hours south — after the coast, retreat to cellar doors and gourmet restaurants in Pokolbin.
