Coonabarabran, the self-proclaimed 'Astronomy Capital of Australia', sits on the edge of the Warrumbungle National Park in north-central NSW. This small country town offers big skies, volcanic peaks, and a genuine outback atmosphere that feels a world away from the coast. It's a perfect stop for stargazers, hikers, and anyone wanting to experience the quiet grandeur of the Australian bush.
Highlights & What to See
- Warrumbungle National Park – A dramatic landscape of volcanic peaks and ancient lava flows. Hike to the Breadknife, a spectacular 90-metre-high rock wall, or summit Mount Exmouth for panoramic views.
- Australian Astronomical Observatory (Siding Spring) – Visit one of Australia's premier observatories. The visitor centre offers fascinating insights into space exploration, and you can peer through a telescope on scheduled nights.
- Milroy Observatory – A private observatory run by passionate locals offering intimate stargazing sessions. Book ahead for a guided tour of the southern sky.
- Crystal Kingdom – A quirky museum and gallery showcasing an impressive collection of fossils, minerals, and meteorites. Great for kids and geology buffs.
- Pilliga Forest – Just south of town, this vast semi-arid woodland is home to the rare Pilliga mouse and offers excellent birdwatching, walking trails, and scenic drives.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend two nights to fully experience the area. Arrive mid-afternoon, explore the town and Crystal Kingdom, then head to the Warrumbungles for sunset. The next day is ideal for a long hike in the national park (allow 4–6 hours) and a night-time observatory visit. If you're short on time, a full day trip from Dubbo or Tamworth is doable but rushed. Stargazers will want at least two clear nights.
