On South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, Coffin Bay is a wild, windswept paradise of oyster farms, white sand dunes, and turquoise waters. Despite its morbid name (a corruption of 'Coffin Island' after a ship), this is a place of life and abundance. It's the oyster capital of Australia, but also a gateway to national park wilderness and some of the state's best coastal walks.
Highlights & What to See
- Coffin Bay Oysters – Taste the famous 'Coffin Bay bivalves' straight from the water at the Coffin Bay Oyster Farm or one of the local shacks. Join a farm tour to see how they're grown.
- Coffin Bay National Park – Explore limestone cliffs, sheltered beaches and off-road tracks. Don't miss the lookout at Point Avoid for sweeping views over the bay.
- Oyster Walk – A 1.5 km boardwalk through mangroves and saltmarsh, with interpretive signs about the ecosystem and oyster farming history.
- Kellidie Bay Conservation Park – A haven for birdlife and a great spot for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding in calm waters.
- Almonta Beach – A long, sandy stretch perfect for a swim or a peaceful picnic, especially at sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day here: start with a morning oyster farm tour, then drive the national park loop (allow 2–3 hours with stops) and finish with an afternoon walk or kayak. If you're a keen fisher or walker, a second day lets you tackle longer trails like the Smooth Pool Walk (6 km return).
