The Coastal Walk in the Hunter Valley is a stunning 10-kilometre track that hugs the rugged coastline between Stockton Beach and Birubi Beach. This relatively flat, easy walk offers dramatic views of the Tasman Sea, towering sand dunes, and the chance to spot migrating whales between June and November. It's a perfect way to experience the raw beauty of the New South Wales coast without leaving the wine region behind.
Highlights & What to See
- Stockton Beach Sand Dunes: The southern end of the walk reveals the massive, shifting sand dunes of Stockton Beach, the largest moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. They're a surreal contrast to the blue ocean.
- Birubi Beach Lookout: A short detour leads to a lookout with panoramic views over the beach and the distant headlands. It's a prime spot for whale watching.
- Shipwreck Remains: Keep an eye out for the rusted remains of the SS Pasha Bulker, a coal ship that ran aground in 2007 and was later refloated, but some debris remains visible at low tide.
- Aboriginal Heritage: The area is part of the Worimi Conservation Lands, and interpretive signs along the walk explain the cultural significance of the land to the Worimi people.
- Birdlife: The coastal scrub and dunes are home to a variety of birds, including sea eagles, oystercatchers, and the endangered little tern.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full morning or afternoon for the walk, which takes about 2.5 to 3 hours one way at a leisurely pace. If you're short on time, you can walk a shorter section from either end and turn back. The walk is best done at low tide to avoid the soft sand sections and to see the shipwreck remains. Combine it with a visit to a nearby winery in the afternoon for a perfect day of coast and cellar.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Nelson Bay: A charming harbour town with dolphin watching cruises and excellent seafood restaurants.
- Port Stephens: A larger region offering whale watching, kayaking, and the Tomaree National Park for coastal hikes.
- Hunter Valley Wine Country: Just a 30-minute drive inland, you can visit world-class wineries like Brokenwood or Tyrrell's for a tasting.
