Chichester State Forest

Deep in the Hunter Valley’s rugged hinterland, Chichester State Forest is a vast wilderness of tall eucalypts, ferny gullies and pristine rivers. This is the place to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in true Australian bush — think lyrebirds calling, the scent of peppermint gum, and the cool shade of 1000-year-old trees. Four-wheel-drive tracks and walking trails lead to swimming holes, picnic spots and spectacular lookouts, while the forest’s namesake, the Chichester River, offers superb trout fishing and crystal-clear pools for a mid-hike dip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day exploring the forest — arrive early to secure a good picnic spot and pack a map as phone reception is patchy. If you’re keen on hiking or 4WDing, consider an overnight stay at one of the basic campgrounds (e.g. Telegherry or Wombat Creek) to truly soak up the serenity. Half a day is enough for a quick swim and lookout walk, but the forest rewards those who linger.
