Bungonia State Conservation Area
Carved into the rugged Southern Highlands, Bungonia State Conservation Area is a dramatic landscape of sheer limestone gorges, plunging waterfalls, and ancient caves that will leave you awestruck. Just two hours from Sydney, this wild pocket of nature offers some of the most spectacular canyon views in NSW, with the Shoalhaven River snaking 300 metres below the clifftops. It’s a paradise for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving raw, untamed beauty – all without the crowds of the Blue Mountains.
Highlights & What to See
- Bungonia Lookout & Gorge Rim Walk: Start at the main lookout for a heart-stopping panorama of the gorge. The 3.5 km Gorge Rim Walk follows the cliff edge, offering ever-changing perspectives of the chasm and, in spring, a carpet of wildflowers.
- Adams Lookout: A short, easy walk leads to this quieter viewpoint, perfect for a picnic while you watch wedge-tailed eagles ride the thermals above the abyss.
- Slot Canyon & Waterfall Hikes: The 6 km return track to Slot Canyon is a stunner – you’ll squeeze through narrow rock corridors and end at a seasonal waterfall that cascades into a deep pool. Bring sturdy shoes and plenty of water.
- Bungonia Caves: While the caves are closed to casual visitors (for bat conservation), you can join a guided adventure caving tour with a licensed operator to explore the underground world of stalactites and fossil-rich limestone.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for eastern grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies, and a dazzling array of birds including superb lyrebirds and crimson rosellas.
Suggested Time to Spend
You’ll want at least a full day to properly experience Bungonia. Arrive early morning to tackle the Gorge Rim Walk and Slot Canyon hike, then break for lunch at one of the picnic areas near the campground. If you’re keen on a guided cave tour, book ahead – it adds another 2–3 hours. For photographers, late afternoon light transforms the gorge into a canvas of gold and shadow. Overnight camping is available if you’d rather not rush; the dark skies here are excellent for stargazing.
