In the red-dusted heart of outback New South Wales, Broken Hill is an unlikely but brilliant art hub. The town's intense light, stark landscapes and mining heritage have drawn artists for over a century, and its galleries are a testament to that creative spirit. Here you can wander through historic collections of Australian impressionism, contemporary Indigenous works, and quirky local pieces — all with a distinctly outback flavour. It's a must for anyone wanting to understand the soul of this remote region.
Highlights & What to See
- Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery – Housed in a grand 1880s building, this gallery holds an impressive collection of Australian art, including works by the famous 'Brushmen of the Bush' – Pro Hart, Jack Absalom and others who captured the outback's raw beauty.
- Pro Hart Gallery – The former home and studio of the legendary outback artist. You'll see his vibrant, larger-than-life paintings, sculptures, and even his Rolls-Royce covered in his own artwork. It's eccentric and utterly unforgettable.
- Albert Kersten Mining & Minerals Museum (GeoCentre) – Not strictly an art gallery, but this museum showcases stunning mineral specimens that are natural works of art, alongside fascinating mining history. The giant silver nugget is a highlight.
- Indigenous art at the Living Desert Reserve – A short drive from town, this reserve features a sculpture trail with 12 sandstone artworks created by local Indigenous artists. The sunset views over the desert are spectacular.
- Silver City Mint & Art Centre – A blend of gallery and working mint where you can see silver-smithing demonstrations and buy unique outback-inspired jewellery and art.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day to explore Broken Hill's galleries properly. Start at the Regional Gallery in the morning, then visit Pro Hart Gallery and the GeoCentre after lunch. If you have a second day, take a sunset trip to the Living Desert Sculpture Symposium. The galleries are compact and walkable, but you'll want time to soak in the stories behind the art.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Silverton – A ghost-town-turned-artist-haven, famous as a film set for Mad Max 2. Its tiny galleries and eerie pub are worth a half-day trip.
- Menindee Lakes – About 110 km south-east, these vast, bird-filled lakes offer a surreal contrast to the desert. Great for a picnic and birdwatching.
- Mutawintji National Park – A couple of hours north-east, this park has ancient Aboriginal rock art sites, rugged gorges and abundant wildlife. Ideal for a day hike.
- Broken Hill’s Historic Mining Sites – The Line of Lode Miners Memorial and the Daydream Mine give context to the region's wealth and hardship, adding depth to the art you've seen.
