Escape the crowds and discover the Broke Fordwich Wine Trail, a pocket of the Hunter Valley that feels refreshingly under-the-radar. This is the region’s oldest wine district, where convict-built cellars and century-old vines sit against a backdrop of broken-backed hills and eucalyptus forests. The pace here is slower, the cellar doors more intimate, and the wines – especially the Semillon and Shiraz – are world-class. It’s the perfect detour for travellers who want to taste history along with their tasting flight.
Highlights & What to See
- Wine tasting at historic cellar doors – Drop into family-run estates like Broke Estate and Margan Family Winegrowers, where you can taste limited-release wines and chat directly with winemakers. Don’t miss the museum release Semillons.
- Broke Village – A tiny, character-filled settlement with a general store, a historic pub (the Broke Inn) and a handful of art galleries. Perfect for a lazy lunch between tastings.
- Fordwich Siding – A restored railway station now home to a small vineyard and tasting room. The surrounding farmland and creek add to the bucolic charm.
- Scenic drive along Broke Road – Wind through paddocks and vine-covered slopes, with stops at lookout points over the valley. The road itself is a highlight, especially in autumn when the leaves turn gold.
- Bushwalking in Yengo National Park – The trailhead is just a few kilometres away, offering short walks through sandstone gorges and Aboriginal engraving sites. Combine nature with your wine trail.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full day to do the trail justice. Start mid-morning at a couple of cellar doors, break for lunch at the Broke Inn or a picnic among the vines, then visit two or three more wineries in the afternoon. If you’re a keen photographer or bushwalker, add another half-day to explore Yengo National Park. The trail is compact enough that you won’t feel rushed, but rich enough to fill a leisurely day.
