Just a 15-minute drive south of Nelson Bay, the Bay of Islands is a stunning coastal stretch of white-sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and rocky headlands that feel a world away from the main tourist strip. Part of the Myall Lakes National Park, this pocket of paradise is perfect for a peaceful beach day, a spot of fishing, or a paddle on the calm waters. With its sheltered coves and abundant birdlife, it’s a favourite for locals and savvy travellers alike.
Highlights & What to See
- Bennetts Beach – The main beach, a long stretch of powdery sand that’s ideal for swimming, sunbaking, and long walks. The water is usually calm and clear.
- Box Beach – A smaller, more secluded cove at the southern end, popular with naturists and those after a quieter spot.
- Boat Harbour – A sheltered bay perfect for launching a kayak or paddleboard; explore the rocky islands just offshore.
- Coastal walking track – A short but scenic trail from Bennetts Beach to Box Beach offers panoramic views of the bay and the chance to spot sea eagles and dolphins.
- Snorkelling & fishing – The clear waters around the rocky headlands are great for snorkelling, while the deeper channels attract bream and flathead.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can easily spend a whole day here – arrive mid-morning, stake out a spot on Bennetts Beach, go for a swim, and tackle the coastal walk after lunch. If you’re short on time, even a couple of hours in the late afternoon is rewarding, when the light softens and the crowds thin out. The bay is also a lovely stop on a self-drive loop from Nelson Bay through the Myall Lakes region.
