Thundering into a deep gorge carved through ancient sandstone, Apsley Falls is one of the most dramatic waterfalls in New South Wales. Located within Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, this two-tiered cascade plunges over 200 metres into the Apsley River valley. The viewing platforms offer breathtaking perspectives, especially after rain when the falls are at their most powerful. The surrounding bushland is rich with birdlife and wildflowers, making it a rewarding stop for nature lovers and photographers alike.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Lookout: The primary viewing platform provides a sweeping panorama of the upper and lower falls, with the sheer cliffs of the gorge as a backdrop.
- Rim Walk: A well-maintained walking track (about 1.5 km return) follows the edge of the gorge, offering multiple vantage points and a chance to spot wedge-tailed eagles soaring below.
- Oxley Wild Rivers National Park: The park protects a vast wilderness area with deep gorges, eucalypt forests, and diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for wallabies, echidnas, and lyrebirds.
- Picnic Areas: There are shaded picnic tables near the carpark, perfect for a lunch break with a view.
- Photography: Early morning or late afternoon light casts golden hues on the falls and gorge walls. Bring a wide-angle lens to capture the full scale.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find that 1–2 hours is sufficient to appreciate the falls and complete the short walks. If you're keen on photography or want to explore the longer trails in the national park, allow half a day. The site is easily combined with a visit to nearby Walcha or as a detour on the drive between the Hunter Valley and the New England region.
