Yerranderie is a hauntingly beautiful ghost town tucked away in the rugged Blue Mountains hinterland, once a thriving silver-mining settlement in the early 1900s. Today, its eerie ruins, silent streets, and wild bushland setting offer a unique blend of history and solitude for adventurous travellers. Reached via a scenic 4WD track or a challenging bushwalk, Yerranderie feels like a forgotten world, with the remains of the town’s pub, post office, and cottages slowly being reclaimed by the eucalypt forest.
Highlights & What to See
- Ghost Town Ruins – Wander the remnants of the old silver-mining town, including the roofless Grand Hotel, the post office, and the miners’ cottages, with interpretive signs that conjure the boom-and-bust era.
- Colong Caves – Explore the impressive limestone cave system just outside town, a haven for experienced cavers (bring your own gear and a guide if possible).
- Kowmung River – Follow the trail down to this pristine, crystal-clear river for a refreshing swim or a picnic amid the wilderness.
- Bushwalking Trails – Tackle the Yerranderie to Kanangra Walls walk (part of the longer Six Foot Track) for epic views over the Kanangra-Boyd National Park.
- Stargazing – With zero light pollution, the night sky here is a dazzling spectacle—bring a blanket and a star chart.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full day trip from the Blue Mountains or Oberon, but to truly soak in the atmosphere and explore the caves, stay overnight at the Yerranderie Private Camping Area (basic facilities only). If you’re hiking in, allow 2–3 days to connect with the Kanangra-Boyd wilderness loop. Most visitors arrive by 4WD (high clearance recommended) and spend 4–6 hours exploring the town and nearby trails.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kanangra-Boyd National Park – Dramatic sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, and the Kanangra Walls lookout are just a 30-minute drive north.
- Oberon – A charming highland town with the famous Mayfield Garden, trout fishing, and the Jenolan Caves nearby.
- Jenolan Caves – Australia’s most spectacular limestone cave system, less than an hour’s drive from Oberon.
- Blue Mountains National Park – Combine Yerranderie with the iconic Three Sisters, Echo Point, and the scenic railway at Katoomba (allow at least 2 days).
