Wyangala Waters State Park is a sprawling 10,000-hectare wilderness reserve hugging the shores of Wyangala Dam on the Lachlan River, about 90 minutes west of Canberra. This is a place where the ochre cliffs meet deep blue water, and the silence is broken only by the call of a yellow-tailed black cockatoo or the splash of a Murray cod. It's a favourite for self-drive adventurers, water-sports enthusiasts, and anyone craving a genuine bush escape without the crowds of the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Wyangala Dam & Lake: The centrepiece of the park, this vast body of water is perfect for kayaking, sailing, and fishing for Murray cod and golden perch. The dam wall itself is an impressive sight, with panoramic views from the lookout.
- Cliff-top Lookouts: Walk to the eastern edge of the park for breathtaking views over the lake and the surrounding riverine forest. Sunrise and sunset here are unforgettable.
- Bushwalking Trails: Several marked trails wind through box-gum woodlands and along the shoreline. The 2.5-km River Track is a gentle stroll that reveals ancient river red gums and abundant birdlife.
- Wildlife Spotting: Kangaroos, wallabies, and echidnas are common; keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead. The park is also a stronghold for the superb parrot.
- Wyangala Waters Winery: Just outside the park, this boutique cellar door offers tastings of cool-climate shiraz and riesling, with a lovely deck overlooking the vineyards.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find that two to three days is ideal to truly soak in Wyangala Waters. Arrive early on day one to set up camp or check into a cabin, then spend the afternoon paddling or fishing. Dedicate the second day to a longer bushwalk and a visit to the winery. If you have a third day, consider a boat tour of the lake or simply relaxing by the water. The park is also a great overnight stop on a Canberra–Sydney road trip.
