Wollomombi Gorge, in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, is one of Australia’s deepest gorges, plunging over 850 metres. The lookout offers breathtaking views of the rugged escarpment and the Wollomombi River snaking far below. It’s a must for hikers and photographers seeking dramatic landscapes and a sense of wild isolation.
Highlights & What to See
- Wollomombi Lookout – The main viewpoint delivers a jaw-dropping panorama across the gorge, especially spectacular at sunrise or sunset when the rock faces glow gold.
- Wollomombi Falls – After rain, these cascades tumble over 200 metres into the gorge, a powerful sight best viewed from the lookout or the walking track.
- Gorge walking tracks – The short, paved track to the lookout is easy, while the longer Wollomombi–Chandler circuit (8 km) descends into the gorge for a different perspective.
- Oxley Wild Rivers National Park – This UNESCO World Heritage Gondwana Rainforest site protects pristine wilderness with diverse birdlife, including peregrine falcons and wedge-tailed eagles.
- Picnic facilities – Shaded tables near the car park make for a perfect spot to enjoy lunch with a view.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend 1–2 hours visiting the lookout and taking a short walk. For the full experience, allow half a day to hike the gorge circuit (4–5 hours) and soak in the scenery. It’s an ideal stop on a road trip through the New England region or as a day trip from Armidale (30 minutes away).
