Plunging 305 metres into a fern-clad amphitheatre, Wallaman Falls is Australia’s single-drop waterfall and one of Queensland’s most spectacular sights. Located within Girringun National Park, about 50 kilometres southwest of Ingham, the falls are at their thunderous best after summer rains. The short walk to the lookout offers a breathtaking frontal view, while the steep descent to the base pool rewards with a cool misty spray. This is a place where the sheer power of water meets ancient rainforest – a must for any traveller exploring Tropical North Queensland.
Highlights & What to See
- Wallaman Falls Lookout – A short, wheelchair-accessible path leads to the main lookout, offering a jaw-dropping panorama of the falls plunging into the gorge below.
- Day-use area and picnic spots – Enjoy a barbecue or picnic among towering kauri pines and palm trees, with the sound of the falls in the background.
- Stony Creek walking track – A 3.2 km return walk descending 260 metres through lush rainforest to the base of the falls. Allow 2–3 hours and wear sturdy shoes.
- Wildlife spotting – Keep an eye out for cassowaries, musky rat-kangaroos, and a dazzling array of birds such as the Victoria’s riflebird and wompoo fruit-dove.
- Girringun National Park – The park itself is a World Heritage-listed wonderland of wet tropics rainforest, with other waterfalls and walking tracks to explore.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours at Wallaman Falls, which allows time for the lookout, a picnic, and the walk to the base. If you’re keen on hiking or photography, budget a full morning or afternoon. The road in is sealed but winding, so factor in 45 minutes each way from Ingham. Combine with other Girringun National Park attractions for a full day out.
