Walgett, a classic outback town on the banks of the Barwon and Namoi rivers, is the heart of the Kamilaroi people and a gateway to the red-soil plains of north-western NSW. Here, the wide main street, the historic pub, and the slow-moving river tell stories of a time when Cobb & Co coaches and paddle steamers ruled. It’s a place to slow down, feel the big sky, and connect with deep Aboriginal culture.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Walgett is a stopover rather than a destination. Plan for a half-day to explore the town, soak in the bore baths, and walk along the river. It works best as a lunch or overnight break on a drive between Lightning Ridge (1 hour east) and Bourke (2.5 hours west). If you're keen on a cultural tour, book ahead and allow an extra half-day.
