Ultimo is a compact, culture-packed inner-city suburb hugging the southern edge of Sydney's CBD. It’s a neighbourhood where red-brick heritage meets creative energy — home to the Powerhouse Museum, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), and a lively student vibe. With its laneway cafés, indie bookshops, and the sprawling green expanse of Victoria Park, Ultimo offers a genuine slice of Sydney life away from the harbour crowds. It’s an ideal base for travellers who want to soak up museums, people-watch in a park, and eat well without the tourist markup.
Highlights & What to See
- Powerhouse Museum – This vast, wonderfully eclectic museum (housed in a former power station) is the suburb’s star attraction. Its collection spans science, design, space exploration, and social history — don’t miss the Boulton & Watt steam engine, the Strasburg clock, and the hands-on Experimentations gallery.
- Victoria Park – A beloved local green space with a heritage-listed rotunda, a duck pond, and plenty of shaded lawns. It’s perfect for a picnic or a lazy afternoon with a book. On weekends, you’ll find community sports and dog walkers aplenty.
- UTS Tower & The Dr Chau Chak Wing Building – The UTS campus is an architectural playground. The Dr Chau Chak Wing Building (designed by Frank Gehry) is a crumpled brown-brick masterpiece that looks like a giant paper bag — a must-see for design buffs.
- Harris Street Eateries – This main drag is lined with excellent coffee shops, Vietnamese pho joints, and hole-in-the-wall bakeries. Grab a flat white at Edition Roasters or a banh mi at Marrickville Pork Roll.
- Ultimo Community Centre & Library – A hub of local life, housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century building. Check out their community garden and rotating art exhibitions.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is plenty to explore Ultimo’s main draws. Start your morning at the Powerhouse Museum (allow 2–3 hours), then wander down Harris Street for lunch. Afterward, stroll through Victoria Park or pop into the UTS campus for a quick architectural gawk. If you’re a museum lover, you could easily stretch this to a full day by diving deep into the Powerhouse’s nooks. Ultimo is best combined with a visit to nearby Darling Harbour or Pyrmont.
