The Tweed Coast is a glorious stretch of golden sand, rolling surf, and laid-back coastal villages just south of the Queensland border. With a subtropical climate and uncrowded beaches, it offers a more relaxed alternative to the Gold Coast. The main hubs are Kingscliff, Cabarita, and Hastings Point, each with its own character. The area is perfect for swimming, surfing, and long beach walks, with a backdrop of lush hinterland and national parks.
Highlights & What to See
- Kingscliff Beach – A long, patrolled beach with a lively main street of cafés and boutiques. Great for families and beginner surfers.
- Cabarita Beach – A stunning, less developed beach with a relaxed vibe. The headland offers excellent views and whale watching in season.
- Hastings Point – Known for its rock pools at low tide and the nearby Cudgen Nature Reserve. A peaceful spot for snorkeling and picnics.
- Fingal Head – A small headland with a historic lighthouse and dramatic views over the Tweed River mouth. Keep an eye out for dolphins.
- Pottsville Beach – A family-friendly beach with a shaded playground and easy access to the Tweed Coast’s popular walking and cycling paths.
- Mooball National Park – Inland from Pottsville, this park protects rainforest and offers short walks to waterfalls and swimming holes.
Suggested Time to Spend
To fully enjoy the Tweed Coast, plan for at least two to three days. This gives you time to explore several beaches, enjoy a coastal walk or bike ride, and sample the local food scene. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Byron Bay or the Gold Coast is possible, but you’ll want to linger longer.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Byron Bay – About 45 minutes south, with its iconic lighthouse, surf breaks, and vibrant town.
- Gold Coast – North of the border, offering theme parks, shopping, and high-rise beaches.
- Tweed Valley – Explore the rural hinterland with farm gates, wineries, and the historic town of Murwillumbah.
- Mount Warning – A challenging hike to the summit for sunrise views over the caldera.
- Brunswick Heads – A charming coastal village with a river mouth perfect for kayaking and fishing.
