Out here in the far north-west corner of New South Wales, Tibooburra is the kind of place where the red dirt roads stretch to the horizon and the pub is the heart of town. Known as the 'Gateway to the Corner Country', this remote settlement offers a raw, elemental outback experience. The main street is a dusty strip of historic buildings, and the surrounding landscape is a surreal expanse of red sand and gibber plains, punctuated by the iconic granite tors of the nearby Sturt National Park.
Highlights & What to See
- Sturt National Park – A vast, arid wilderness of red dunes, rocky outcrops, and dry creek beds. Drive the park's 4WD tracks to spot emus, kangaroos, and wedge-tailed eagles. Don't miss the old homestead ruins and the 'Jump Up' lookout for panoramic desert views.
- Family Hotel Tibooburra – This historic pub, built in 1882, is the social hub. Its walls are covered in visitor graffiti – a tradition dating back to the gold rush. Grab a cold beer on the verandah and chat with locals.
- Tibooburra Cemetery – A poignant pioneer cemetery with graves dating to the 1880s, reflecting the harshness of frontier life.
- Corner Country 4WD tracks – Explore the legendary 'Strzelecki Track' or the 'Birdsville Track' which begin near here. Even a short drive along the 'Tibooburra to Cameron Corner' route offers a taste of the outback.
- Granite tors – The strange, weathered granite outcrops around town, especially at 'The Granites', are perfect for sunset photography.
Suggested Time to Spend
Tibooburra is a destination for those with time to spare. Most visitors spend 2–3 days here, which allows for a full day exploring Sturt National Park, a morning visiting the historic sites, and an evening at the pub. If you're on a road trip from Broken Hill (about 330 km north), plan to arrive by afternoon and spend the next day adventuring. For self-drivers, a 4WD is essential for most tracks; a 2WD can reach town but not the park's more remote areas.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Broken Hill – The 'Silver City' is the closest major town, offering art galleries, the Living Desert sculpture park, and mining history. A 3–4 hour drive south.
- White Cliffs – Famous for its underground opal mines and the 'White Cliffs Hotel' built into the hillside. About 2 hours south-west.
- Cameron Corner – The iconic survey point where NSW, Queensland, and South Australia meet. A 4WD trip from Tibooburra is an adventure in itself (about 100 km north).
- Innamincka (SA) – Remote outpost on the Cooper Creek, known for the Burke and Wills Dig Tree. Accessible via the Strzelecki Track (4WD only).
