Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Escape the coastal crowds and head inland to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, a lush, green world of ancient rainforests, tumbling waterfalls, and artist-filled mountain villages. This is where Queensland’s volcanic past meets subtropical abundance — think giant strangler figs, misty calderas, and some of the best bushwalking in the state. The hinterland feels a world away from the beach strip, yet it’s only a 30-minute drive from the coast.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

You can get a taste of the hinterland on a day trip from the coast, but to truly appreciate its walking trails and village ambience, plan for at least two nights. Spend one day exploring Mount Tamborine and Lamington, and another in the Maleny–Kondalilla area. If you love hiking, add an extra day for longer treks in Lamington.
