Stretching from Sydney's southern suburbs all the way to the Victorian border, the South Coast Road Trip is a quintessential Australian coastal drive. This route takes you through a landscape of dramatic sea cliffs, pristine beaches, lush national parks, and charming seaside towns. It's a journey where you can surf in the morning, hike through rainforest in the afternoon, and feast on fresh oysters by sunset.
Highlights & What to See
- Royal National Park – Australia's oldest national park, with stunning coastal walks like the Coast Track and the figure-eight pools at Burning Palms.
- Kiama Blowhole – A spectacular natural blowhole that spouts water up to 25 metres high, especially impressive after rough seas.
- Jervis Bay – Home to Hyams Beach, famed for having the whitest sand in the world, and crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming, kayaking, and dolphin watching.
- Booderee National Park – A protected area with Aboriginal heritage, pristine beaches, and excellent snorkelling and bushwalking.
- Batemans Bay – The gateway to the Clyde River estuary, renowned for its oyster farms and seafood restaurants.
- Narooma – A picturesque town with the iconic 'Australia Rock' at the mouth of the Wagonga Inlet, and the stunning Mount Gulaga.
- Bega Valley – Rolling green hills, historic cheese factories, and the elegant town of Merimbula with its stunning lakes and beaches.
- Eden – A historic whaling town with the Killer Whale Museum, and the starting point for the Light to Light Walk in Ben Boyd National Park.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly appreciate the South Coast, plan at least 5–7 days for a one-way drive from Sydney to the Victorian border. This allows for leisurely stops, hikes, and beach time. If you're short on time, focus on the stretch from Royal National Park to Jervis Bay (2–3 days) or from Batemans Bay to Eden (3–4 days). The route is easily extended into a loop via Canberra or the Snowy Mountains for a longer adventure.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Canberra – Australia's capital, about 2 hours inland from Batemans Bay, offers museums, galleries, and national institutions.
- Snowy Mountains – A detour from Cooma or Bega takes you to alpine scenery, hiking, and skiing in winter.
- Shoalhaven Coast – The region around Nowra and Huskisson, with beautiful beaches and the Booderee National Park.
- Sapphire Coast – The stunning coastal stretch from Bermagui to Eden, known for its sapphire-blue waters and gourmet produce.
- Blue Mountains – While not directly on the coast, combining this with a South Coast trip makes for an epic NSW road trip loop.
