Stretching along the coast from Coffs Harbour to the Solitary Islands, this marine park is a dazzling underwater realm of coral reefs, kelp forests, and crystal-clear waters. It's a haven for divers and snorkellers, with a rich diversity of marine life including turtles, rays, and colourful subtropical fish. The park protects a chain of islands, each with its own unique character, and offers some of the best coastal walks and whale-watching opportunities in New South Wales.
Highlights & What to See
- South Solitary Island: Snorkel or dive around this island's pristine reefs, home to grey nurse sharks, giant cuttlefish, and vibrant coral gardens. The historic lighthouse adds a touch of heritage.
- North Solitary Island: Explore the kelp forests and rocky reefs where you might spot turtles, wobbegong sharks, and schools of tropical fish. It's a top spot for experienced divers.
- Muttonbird Island: Walk the breakwater from Coffs Harbour to this island sanctuary for a close encounter with thousands of wedge-tailed shearwaters (muttonbirds) during breeding season (September–April).
- Whale watching: From June to November, humpback whales migrate along the coast; the Solitary Islands offer prime viewing from boat tours or lookouts on the headlands.
- Korora Lookout: A stunning coastal viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of the marine park and the islands – perfect for photography and spotting dolphins.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly experience the marine park, allow at least two to three days. Spend a day on a diving or snorkelling charter to explore the islands' underwater wonders. Devote another day to coastal walks, such as the Solitary Islands Coastal Walk, and whale watching. If you're short on time, a half-day boat tour can give you a taste, but you'll want to linger.
