Carved by relentless surf into the sandstone cliffs of Royal National Park, the Figure Eight Pools are a series of natural rock pools that form a mesmerising figure-eight shape when the tide is right. This is one of Sydney’s most dramatic coastal walks, combining wild ocean views, heathland, and a rewarding – if fleeting – natural wonder that demands both timing and caution. It’s a must for adventurous travellers who love raw landscapes and a bit of a scramble.
Highlights & What to See
- Figure Eight Pools – The star attraction: two interlocking tidal pools that appear only at low tide. Arrive early to avoid crowds and capture the perfect reflection shot.
- Coastal Track – A stunning 6 km return walk from Garawarra Farm carpark, winding through heath, banksia scrub, and along clifftops with views of the Tasman Sea.
- Burning Palms Beach – A secluded, clothing-optional beach en route, perfect for a quick dip or a picnic on the sand.
- Werrong Lookout – A short detour offering panoramic views of the Illawarra Escarpment and coastline, especially dramatic on clear winter days.
- Wildlife spotting – Keep an eye out for eastern water dragons, lyrebirds, and migrating whales (May–November) from the clifftops.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least half a day (4–5 hours) to do the walk, enjoy the pools at low tide, and linger at the beach. Check tide charts beforehand – the pools are only accessible within two hours either side of low tide. Combine with a morning start to avoid the midday heat and crowds. If you’re driving from Sydney, allow an extra 1.5 hours each way.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
