Royal National Park Figure Eight Pools

Carved by relentless surf into the sandstone cliffs of Royal National Park, the Figure Eight Pools are a series of natural rock pools that form a mesmerising figure-eight shape when the tide is right. This is one of Sydney’s most dramatic coastal walks, combining wild ocean views, heathland, and a rewarding – if fleeting – natural wonder that demands both timing and caution. It’s a must for adventurous travellers who love raw landscapes and a bit of a scramble.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least half a day (4–5 hours) to do the walk, enjoy the pools at low tide, and linger at the beach. Check tide charts beforehand – the pools are only accessible within two hours either side of low tide. Combine with a morning start to avoid the midday heat and crowds. If you’re driving from Sydney, allow an extra 1.5 hours each way.
