Riverina Wine Region
Stretching across the flat, sunbaked plains of southwestern New South Wales, the Riverina Wine Region is one of Australia's most productive and underrated wine areas. Known for its bold reds, aromatic whites, and exceptional botrytis Semillon, this is a place where big-sky landscapes meet down-to-earth hospitality. The mighty Murrumbidgee River irrigates the vineyards, creating a lush patchwork of green vines against the ochre earth. For travellers, it's a rewarding detour off the Hume Highway, offering cellar doors that feel more like friendly conversations than tasting rooms.
Highlights & What to See
- Cellar door hopping in Griffith and surrounding villages – don't miss De Bortoli's celebrated Noble One botrytis Semillon and the Italian-influenced wines at McWilliam's Hanwood Estate.
- Griffith Italian Museum – a fascinating look at the post-war Italian migrants who shaped the region's wine and food culture.
- Wagga Wagga – the lively regional hub with the excellent Wagga Wagga Art Gallery and the River & Wren Market (first Saturday of the month).
- Murrumbidgee River walking trails – gentle riverside paths perfect for a post-lunch stroll, especially around Narrandera and Wagga.
- Local produce – olive groves, citrus orchards, and farmers' markets that showcase the region's Mediterranean-style bounty.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to explore the wine trail at a relaxed pace. Spend the first day tasting around Griffith, the second day heading east to Wagga Wagga and the smaller wineries near Junee, and use the third morning for a leisurely breakfast or a walk along the Murrumbidgee before heading off. The region is compact enough that you can easily combine it with a stopover on a Sydney–Melbourne road trip.
