At the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula, Point Nepean National Park is a windswept, history-laden headland where Bass Strait meets Port Phillip Bay. You’ll come for the dramatic coastal views, stay for the layers of heritage — from Indigenous Bunurong sites to 19th-century fortifications and the quarantine station that processed generations of new arrivals. The air is sharp with salt and eucalyptus, and the walking trails are among the most rewarding in the region.
Highlights & What to See
- Fort Nepean — Explore tunnels, gun emplacements and underground chambers that once guarded Melbourne’s shipping channel. The views from the fort’s lookout are breathtaking.
- Quarantine Station — A haunting complex of timber buildings and hospital wards where ships’ passengers were held from 1852 to the 1970s. Guided tours reveal stories of hope, illness and survival.
- Cheviot Hill Walk — A 3.5 km loop through coastal heath and tea-tree, with wildflowers in spring and near-certain sightings of wallabies and echidnas.
- Point Nepean Cemetery — The final resting place of soldiers and quarantine victims, with a quiet dignity that invites reflection.
- Bass Strait Lookout — Perched above the cliffs, this is the spot for whale-watching (June–October) and photographing the churning turquoise water.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full half-day — at least 4 hours — to do the park justice. The shuttle bus (included with entry) connects the main sites, so you can walk one way and ride back. If you’re keen on every trail and a guided tour of the Quarantine Station, budget 5–6 hours. Early morning is best for solitude and wildlife.
