Ormiston Gorge, a breathtaking natural amphitheatre carved from red quartzite, is one of the West MacDonnell Ranges' most iconic waterholes. About 135km west of Alice Springs, this gorge offers a classic Outback experience: cool, permanent water hemmed by towering cliffs, with ghost gums clinging to the rock faces. It's a magnet for hikers, swimmers, and photographers, especially in the late afternoon when the walls glow fiery orange.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the permanent waterhole – The main plunge pool is the heart of the gorge; the water is bracingly clear and surprisingly deep, perfect for a refreshing dip after a walk.
- Ghost Gum Lookout Walk – A 1.5km loop that climbs gently to a viewpoint over the gorge, where gnarled ghost gums frame the scene. Allow 45 minutes.
- Ormiston Pound Walk – A more challenging 7km circuit that takes you around the entire gorge, through spinifex and over dry creek beds, offering expansive views of the pound (a natural basin). Count on 3–4 hours.
- Spot wildlife – Look for black-footed rock-wallabies on the cliffs, and listen for the calls of zebra finches and honeyeaters; dingoes sometimes pad through the car park at dusk.
- Sunset photography – The gorge walls catch the last light spectacularly; head to the lookout or the far end of the waterhole for the best shots.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours, which is enough for a swim and the Ghost Gum Lookout walk. If you want to tackle the Ormiston Pound Walk, plan for at least half a day (4–5 hours including breaks). To really soak up the atmosphere, consider arriving early (before 9am) to avoid crowds and the midday heat, or come late afternoon for golden light and cooler temperatures. The gorge is open year-round, but summer (Dec–Feb) can be extremely hot; aim for winter mornings or autumn afternoons.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Ellery Creek Big Hole – About 50km east, a large, deep waterhole ringed by red cliffs; excellent for swimming and picnicking.
- Serpentine Gorge – A short walk leads to a narrow, shaded waterhole; less crowded than Ormiston, great for a quiet stop.
- Standley Chasm – A dramatic, narrow cleft in the rock that glows at midday; about 80km east, often done as a day trip from Alice Springs.
- Alice Springs Desert Park – Back in town, this wildlife park showcases desert ecosystems and offers a chance to see bilbies and other arid-zone animals up close.
