North Stradbroke Island, or 'Straddie' as locals call it, is a laid-back sand island off the coast of Brisbane, accessible by a short ferry ride from Cleveland. With its dazzling white beaches, turquoise lakes, and rugged headlands, it's a world away from the city bustle. The island's traditional owners, the Quandamooka people, have lived here for thousands of years, and their culture is woven into the landscape. Whether you're here for a day trip or a longer stay, Straddie offers a quintessential Queensland island experience without the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Point Lookout: The island's main hub, with dramatic coastal walks, a stunning ocean pool, and prime whale-watching (June–November). Don't miss the Gorge Walk for breathtaking sea cliffs and the chance to spot sea turtles and rays in the water below.
- Cylinder Beach: A protected, patrolled swimming beach with gentle waves—perfect for families. The adjacent headland offers panoramic views.
- Brown Lake (Bummiera): A perched lake stained tea-brown by paperbark trees, ideal for a peaceful swim or kayak. The tannins are great for your skin!
- Blue Lake (Karboora): A stunning, crystal-clear freshwater lake surrounded by eucalypt forest. It's a sacred site to the Quandamooka people; swim respectfully.
- North Gorge Walk: A 1.5km loop from Point Lookout that delivers some of the best coastal scenery on the island. Keep an eye out for dolphins, manta rays, and migrating humpback whales.
- Main Beach: A 32km stretch of surf beach on the eastern side—4WD access only. Great for fishing, surfing, and solitude.
Suggested Time to Spend
A day trip from Brisbane or the Gold Coast is feasible if you're short on time—catch the first ferry and you'll have a solid 6–7 hours on the island. However, to truly experience Straddie's beaches, lakes, and laid-back vibe, plan for at least two days. One night allows you to explore the southern end (Point Lookout) and the lakes, plus watch the sunset from the Gorge. With three days, you can venture further north to the quieter beaches and do a 4WD tour.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Moreton Island: Another sand island with Tangalooma's shipwrecks and wild dolphin feeding—easily combined via a day tour from Brisbane.
- Stradbroke Island (South): Technically separated by a narrow channel, South Stradbroke is less developed and popular with campers and boaters.
- Brisbane's Southern Bay Islands: Explore Coochiemudlo, Russell, or Macleay islands for more remote getaways.
- Gold Coast Hinterland: Lamington and Springbrook national parks offer lush rainforest walks and waterfalls—a great contrast to the island's coastal scenery.
- Sunshine Coast: Head north for the stunning beaches of Noosa and the glasshouse mountains.
