Perched on the dramatic headland at the entrance to Brisbane Water, North Head Sanctuary is a wild, windswept haven that rewards visitors with staggering coastal views, rich Aboriginal heritage, and a surprising diversity of birdlife. Once a military base, this headland now feels gloriously remote, yet it's only a short drive from Gosford. The sanctuary's walking trails weave through coastal heath and scribbly gum woodlands, offering glimpses of whales (June–July) and pods of dolphins year-round. It's a place where the roar of the ocean and the scent of saltbush create an instant sense of escape.
Highlights & What to See
- Bouddi Coastal Walk – The sanctuary forms the southern trailhead of this spectacular 8.5 km walk, which hugs the cliff tops past hidden beaches and rock platforms. Even a short stroll from the car park delivers knockout views over the ocean and across to Barrenjoey Head.
- Aboriginal rock engravings – Look for faint but powerful carvings of marine creatures and ancestral figures etched into the sandstone platforms; interpretive signs explain their significance to the Darkinjung people.
- Whale-watching lookout – From the main viewing platform, scan the horizon for humpbacks during migration season. The elevated position makes it one of the best spots on the Central Coast.
- Military relics – Remnants of Fort Bouddi, including gun emplacements and searchlight stations, dot the headland. A short detour leads to a restored 1940s bunker with information panels.
- Birdwatching – Keep an eye out for sea eagles, peregrine falcons, and the endangered eastern bristlebird. The heathland is also alive with honeyeaters and wrens.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal to fully appreciate North Head Sanctuary. Arrive early to walk the Bouddi Coastal Walk as far as Putty Beach (allow 1.5 hours return), then spend time exploring the headland's lookouts and historic sites. If you only have an hour, drive straight to the main lookout and do a short loop around the gun emplacements. The sanctuary is a perfect morning or late-afternoon outing, especially in spring when wildflowers are in bloom.
