Stretching from the northern edge of Sydney to the southern shores of Lake Macquarie, the North Coast Walks offer a stunning tapestry of coastal scenery, from dramatic sea cliffs and secluded beaches to lush coastal rainforest. This network of trails weaves through Bouddi National Park, Munmorah State Conservation Area, and Wyrrabalong National Park, showcasing the raw beauty of the Central Coast. Whether you're after a short sunrise stroll or a full-day trek, these walks reward with whale-watching lookouts, Aboriginal heritage sites, and the chance to spot sea eagles soaring overhead.
Highlights & What to See
- Bouddi Coastal Walk – A 8.5 km one-way track between Putty Beach and MacMasters Beach, passing through littoral rainforest, sandstone cliffs, and the historic Maitland Bay shipwreck site. Don't miss the Aboriginal engraving site at Gerrin Point.
- Munmorah Coastal Walk – A 4 km loop from the Birdie Beach carpark, leading to the iconic 'Lighthouse' rock formation and the whale-watching platform at Snapper Point. In winter, humpbacks are often seen breaching just offshore.
- Wyrrabalong Rainforest Walk – A gentle 1.5 km boardwalk through one of the last remaining coastal rainforests in the region, with towering cabbage tree palms and the chance to see the rare Wyrrabalong daisy.
- Norah Head Lighthouse – Climb this 1903 lighthouse for panoramic views of the coastline; the adjacent rock platforms are great for tide pooling at low tide.
- Catherine Hill Bay – A picturesque historic coal-mining village with a long timber jetty and a patrolled beach; the walk along the headland offers superb photo opportunities.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors dedicate a full day to explore one or two of the main walks. For the Bouddi Coastal Walk, allow 3–4 hours one-way (including stops) if you have a car shuttle arranged, or a shorter 2-hour return from Putty Beach to Gerrin Point. The Munmorah Coastal Walk takes about 1.5 hours, while the Wyrrabalong Rainforest Walk is a quick 30–40 minute detour. To combine walks with a swim or picnic, plan for a leisurely 5–6 hours. Overnight camping is possible at Bouddi National Park (book ahead), allowing a two-day itinerary to tackle multiple trails.
