Rising dramatically from the coastal plain near Laurieton, North Brother Mountain is one of the three iconic 'Brother' peaks that dominate the mid-north coast skyline. Part of the Dooragan National Park, this 485-metre summit rewards hikers with panoramic views stretching from the Camden Haven River system to the Pacific Ocean. The mountain holds deep cultural significance for the Birpai people, and its walking tracks wind through lush subtropical rainforest, offering a genuine wilderness escape just a short drive from Port Macquarie.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Lookout – The short but steep 1.5 km walk to the top is well worth the effort; on a clear day you can see from Seal Rocks to Smoky Cape.
- Three Brothers Walking Track – A challenging 12 km return hike linking North, Middle and South Brother mountains through diverse forest types.
- Camden Haven River – The views from the summit take in this beautiful waterway winding through wetlands and farmland to the sea.
- Dooragan National Park Picnic Areas – Several shady spots at the base are perfect for a post-hike lunch surrounded by towering eucalypts.
- Birdwatching – Keep an eye out for glossy black-cockatoos, king parrots and the elusive rufous fantail flitting through the canopy.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allow half a day for the summit walk and a picnic. If you're tackling the Three Brothers circuit, set aside a full day (5–7 hours) and carry plenty of water. The mountain is best visited in the cooler months (April to October) when the humidity is lower and leeches are less active. Early morning starts are recommended to catch the soft light over the coast and avoid afternoon thunderstorms in summer.
