Nightcap National Park is a lush, subtropical wilderness in the hinterland of the New South Wales far north coast, offering some of the most spectacular rainforest walks in the state. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests and is a haven for wildlife, including the vibrant Albert's lyrebird and the threatened rufous scrub-bird. With its towering fig trees, crystal-clear creeks, and dramatic volcanic peaks, Nightcap is a serene escape for nature lovers and hikers seeking an immersive forest experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Protesters Falls Walk – A short, family-friendly track through ancient rainforest leads to a stunning 20-metre waterfall, named after the 1979 protests that saved the area from logging.
- Mount Nardi – Drive to the summit for panoramic views over the Tweed Valley and Mount Warning. On clear days, you can see the Gold Coast skyline. The area is also a prime birdwatching spot.
- Terania Creek Picnic Area – A peaceful spot for a swim in the cool, clear waters of Terania Creek, surrounded by towering brush box trees.
- Minyon Falls Loop Walk – A 6.5 km loop that descends through rainforest to the base of the 100-metre Minyon Falls, passing through groves of strangler figs and palms.
- Nightcap Range Lookout – A short walk from the car park offers sweeping views over the forest canopy and out to the coast.
Suggested Time to Spend
To fully appreciate Nightcap National Park, allocate a full day. Start with the early morning at Mount Nardi for birdwatching and views, then tackle the Minyon Falls Loop Walk (allow 2-3 hours). After a picnic lunch at Terania Creek, visit Protesters Falls in the afternoon. If you're short on time, a half-day can still cover the highlights: drive to Mount Nardi, do the short Protesters Falls walk, and enjoy a swim at Terania Creek.
