Stretching along the dramatic coastline between Bar Beach and Strzelecki Lookout, the Newcastle Memorial Walk is a stunning 450-metre steel-and-glass boardwalk that offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and the city's rugged headlands. Opened in 2015 to commemorate the centenary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli, the walk combines poignant war memorials with one of the best coastal walks in New South Wales. The elevated path clings to the cliffs, making you feel suspended between sky and sea, with the constant roar of waves crashing below.
Highlights & What to See
- Panoramic Coastal Views: The walk offers uninterrupted vistas from Bar Beach to Merewether Beach, with the iconic Nobbys Headland and Port Stephens in the distance. It's especially magical at sunrise or sunset when the light paints the cliffs in warm hues.
- ANZAC Memorial Panels: Engraved glass panels along the walk tell the story of the 1st Battalion, which trained in the Newcastle area before sailing to Gallipoli. The inscriptions and images provide a moving historical context.
- Strzelecki Lookout: At the southern end, this lookout rewards you with a bird's-eye view of the coastline and the chance to spot humpback whales during their migration (May to November).
- Bogey Hole: A short detour from the walk leads to this historic ocean pool carved by convicts in 1819 for Commandant James Morisset. It's a popular spot for a refreshing dip.
- Bar Beach Reserve: The northern trailhead offers grassy picnic areas, a playground, and easy access to the beach, making it a great spot to start or end your walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30–45 minutes for the walk itself, but budget at least 1.5 hours if you plan to linger at the lookouts, read the memorial panels, and take photos. Combine it with a morning or afternoon exploring the nearby beaches and the Bogey Hole. The walk is easily accessible and suitable for all fitness levels, with gentle gradients and good handrails.
