Stretching from the outskirts of Newcastle all the way to the Queensland border, the New England Highway is one of Australia's great driving routes. This scenic road winds through the New England region's rolling green hills, dramatic gorges, and historic towns, offering a quintessential Aussie road trip experience. Beyond the bitumen, you'll discover a land of ancient volcanoes, world-class national parks, and a thriving food and wine scene that rewards those who take the time to explore.
Highlights & What to See
- Wollemi National Park: Drive through the dramatic sandstone cliffs and deep valleys of this World Heritage-listed wilderness. Keep an eye out for the rare Wollemi pine.
- Hunter Valley Wine Country: While the highway skirts the Hunter, it's an easy detour to sample some of Australia's finest semillon and shiraz. Many cellar doors offer tastings and gourmet produce.
- Barrington Tops National Park: A high-altitude plateau of ancient rainforests and alpine meadows. Take a short walk to the Gloucester Falls or tackle the longer trek to the summit of Mount Barrington.
- Gloucester: This charming town at the foot of the Bucketts mountain range is a perfect stop for a coffee and a wander through its heritage-listed main street.
- New England National Park: One of the most biodiverse areas in NSW, with walking trails that lead to stunning lookouts over the escarpment and, on clear days, all the way to the coast.
- Uralla: A historic gold-rush town with a vibrant arts scene. Visit the McCrossin's Mill Museum and the famous 'Thunderbolt' statue, celebrating the bushranger Captain Thunderbolt.
- Armidale: The region's cultural hub, home to the New England Regional Art Museum and the excellent Museum of Antiquities. Don't miss the nearby Dangars Falls and Gorge.
- Waterfall Way: While not directly on the highway, this scenic drive from Dorrigo to Armidale is a must-do, passing through rainforests and past spectacular waterfalls like Dorrigo National Park's Crystal Shower Falls.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly appreciate the New England Highway, allocate at least 3 to 5 days for a self-drive from Newcastle to the Queensland border. This allows for leisurely stops in the Hunter Valley, a night in Gloucester, and a full day exploring the national parks around Armidale. If you're short on time, a two-day sprint from Sydney to Brisbane is doable, but you'll miss the region's best experiences. For a deeper dive, consider a week-long loop that includes the coast and the hinterland.
