Narrabeen Beach is a long, sweeping stretch of golden sand on Sydney's Northern Beaches, beloved by locals and visitors alike for its consistent surf, laid-back vibe, and stunning lagoon setting. Unlike the more crowded Bondi or Manly, Narrabeen offers a more relaxed pace, with a wide shoreline perfect for walks, picnics, and swimming. The adjacent Narrabeen Lagoon adds a tranquil freshwater element, ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding. This is a quintessential Aussie beach experience without the tourist throngs.
Highlights & What to See
- Surfing at Narrabeen Beach: Known for its reliable waves, the beach has several breaks suitable for all levels, from beginners at the southern end to more advanced surfers near the rock platform. Surf schools operate along the beach.
- Narrabeen Lagoon Trail: A scenic 8.4 km loop around the lagoon, perfect for walking, cycling, or jogging. The path offers birdwatching, picnic spots, and stunning views of the water and bushland.
- Berry Reserve: A grassy park with barbecues, playground, and direct access to the lagoon. Great for families and a relaxing afternoon.
- Long Reef Point: A short drive north, this headland features a golf course, coastal walk, and rock pools with excellent snorkelling at low tide. Look out for whale migrations in winter.
- Narrabeen Lakeside: Hire a kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or catamaran from the Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club and explore the calm waters of the lagoon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to enjoy the beach and lagoon, but you could easily spend a full day here if you add a walk around the lagoon trail or a surf lesson. For a relaxed visit, arrive mid-morning, swim and have lunch at Berry Reserve, then walk part of the lagoon trail in the afternoon. If you're staying in Sydney, it's a popular day trip from the city centre (about 40 minutes by car or bus).
