Stretching across the remote Mallee region of northwestern Victoria, Murray Sunset National Park is a vast, otherworldly landscape of semi-arid wilderness, salt lakes, and ancient red sand dunes. This is a place for intrepid travelers seeking solitude and stark natural beauty, far from the crowds. The park's name hints at its most magical moments: sunrise and sunset paint the salt lakes and sand dunes in fiery hues. Here, you can truly disconnect, camping under the stars and exploring by 4WD on the park's network of sandy tracks.
Highlights & What to See
- Pink Lakes – The most famous are Lake Crosbie, Lake Becking, and Lake Kenyon, which turn a surreal bubblegum pink due to algae and high salt content. The best color appears in late summer and autumn.
- Mallee Cliffs and Sand Dunes – Climb the Big Desert Sand Dune, a massive red sand dune offering panoramic views over the treeless plains. The Mallee Cliffs provide a stark contrast with their rugged escarpments.
- Aboriginal Heritage – The park protects significant cultural sites of the Latji Latji and Nyeri Nyeri peoples. Look for scarred trees and stone arrangements, but treat them with respect.
- Wildlife Spotting – Keep an eye out for red kangaroos, emus, and the elusive Mallee fowl. Birdwatchers will enjoy sightings of Major Mitchell's cockatoos and pink cockatoos.
- 4WD Tracks – The park is a paradise for experienced 4WDers, with tracks like the Mallee Track and Pink Lakes Circuit offering access to remote corners. Always check conditions and carry recovery gear.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least two full days to truly experience the park. One day is enough for a quick drive-through to see the Pink Lakes and a few dunes, but you'll want longer to explore the 4WD tracks and soak in the solitude. Overnight camping is highly recommended—book a site at the popular Pink Lakes Campground or the more remote Mallee Campground. If you're short on time, focus on the eastern side of the park where the main attractions are located.
