Mount Selwyn is a rugged, lesser-known peak in the Great Dividing Range, offering a genuine bushwalking experience away from the crowds. Its summit rewards hikers with sweeping views over the Central Coast hinterland and, on clear days, glimpses of the Pacific Ocean. This is a place for those who crave solitude and a proper leg-stretcher, not a manicured tourist trail.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Selwyn Summit Walk – A 5 km return track that climbs steadily through dry eucalypt forest. The final scramble over boulders is part of the adventure, and the 360-degree view from the top is your prize.
- Birdwatching – Keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles, lyrebirds, and colourful rosellas in the quieter sections of the trail.
- Wildflower Displays – In late winter and spring, the slopes are dotted with flannel flowers, wattles, and orchids. Bring a macro lens.
- Picnic at the Base – The small clearing near the trailhead is a peaceful spot for lunch, with no facilities but plenty of shade.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 2 to 3 hours for the walk and time to soak in the summit views. If you're a keen photographer or birder, allow an extra hour. The track is manageable for moderately fit walkers; start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and to catch the best light over the valley.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Morisset – Famous for its lakeside scenery and the Morisset Hospital grounds (popular for quiet strolls), about 30 minutes north-east.
- Lake Macquarie – Head to the lake's western shore for waterside cafes, kayaking, and sunset views, a 40-minute drive.
- Central Coast Hinterland – Combine with a drive through the rolling hills of Mangrove Mountain or a visit to the historic township of Wollombi.
