Rising 287 metres above the Brisbane River, Mount Coot Tha is the city’s most accessible bushland escape, offering panoramic views from the summit that stretch from the city skyline to Moreton Bay. This leafy reserve is a favourite among locals for sunrise walks, weekend picnics, and a dose of nature without leaving the urban fringe. The lookout is just a short drive from the city centre, making it an easy addition to any Brisbane itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Lookout – The main attraction: a wide, fenced viewing platform with sweeping vistas of Brisbane, the Brisbane River, and on clear days, the Glass House Mountains and Moreton Island. Come at dawn or dusk for the best light.
- Botanic Gardens – The Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mount Coot Tha spread over 56 hectares of themed gardens, including a tropical dome, Japanese garden, and a fragrant herb garden. Free entry and well-marked paths make it a pleasant stroll.
- JC Slaughter Falls – A short, easy walk through eucalypt forest leads to a small but picturesque waterfall. Best after rain, but the shady trail is a lovely leg-stretcher year-round.
- Simpson Falls – Another gentle walk, this one follows Ithaca Creek to a rocky cascade. The track is popular with families and dogs (on leash).
- Mount Coot Tha Reserve Walks – Several interconnected trails, including the 1.5 km Summit Track and the longer 3 km Aboriginal Art Trail, which features a small display of Indigenous rock art.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at the summit lookout and botanic gardens. If you plan to do a longer walk (like the Summit Track or the full loop of the gardens), allow half a day. The reserve is open from 5am to 6pm (or later in summer), and the café at the summit serves breakfast and lunch – a great spot to linger over coffee with a view.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Brisbane City – Just 15 minutes’ drive down the mountain, explore South Bank, the Queensland Museum, or the riverside dining precincts of Eagle Street and Howard Smith Wharves.
- Toowong – A leafy suburb with a lively café scene and the historic Toowong Cemetery (worth a wander for its ornate Victorian graves).
- Mount Nebo & Mount Glorious – For a longer day trip, drive north-west into the D’Aguilar Range for cooler rainforest walks and lookout points.
- St Lucia – Home to the University of Queensland, with the riverside UQ Lakes and the Queensland Art Gallery’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) just a short drive away.
