Mossman Gorge, part of the Daintree National Park, is a stunning slice of ancient rainforest just north of Port Douglas. The crystal-clear Mossman River cascades over granite boulders, creating inviting swimming holes and a lush, emerald-green environment that feels like stepping into another world. This is where the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area reveals its raw beauty, with towering fan palms, strangler figs, and vibrant birdlife.
Highlights & What to See
- Dreamtime Walk: Join a Kuku Yalanji guide for a 1.5-hour interpretive walk that weaves through the rainforest with stories of creation, bush tucker, and traditional lifeways. It's the most culturally immersive way to experience the gorge.
- River Circuit Track: An easy 2.4 km loop that follows the Mossman River, with several platforms offering spectacular views of the gorge. The turquoise water and smooth boulders are irresistible for a cooling dip.
- Swimming Holes: The main swimming area below the car park is popular, but for a quieter spot, continue along the River Circuit to find smaller pools. The water is refreshingly clear and cool.
- Rainforest Boardwalk: A short, accessible boardwalk near the visitor centre provides a quick introduction to the forest, with interpretive signs about the unique flora and fauna.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours at Mossman Gorge, which is enough to do the River Circuit, take a swim, and explore the visitor centre. If you book the Dreamtime Walk (which starts at set times), plan for 4 hours to include the walk and free time. Arrive early (before 10 am) to beat the crowds and secure parking, especially in peak season. The gorge is best visited in the morning when the light filters through the canopy and the water is at its most inviting.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Cape Tribulation: Where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef, about an hour north via the Daintree River ferry. Ideal for a full-day adventure.
- Mossman: The nearby town has a sugar mill and a few local eateries; stop at the Mossman Bakery for a pie.
