Moreton Island, a wild sand island just off Brisbane, is a paradise of untouched beaches, turquoise lagoons, and ancient shipwrecks. With 95% of the island protected as national park, it offers a raw, natural escape where you can camp under the stars, paddle with dolphins, and climb the world's highest vegetated sand dune. The island is accessible only by ferry, adding to its remote, castaway feel.
Highlights & What to See
- Tangalooma Wrecks – Snorkel or dive around 15 deliberately sunk ships that form a fascinating artificial reef teeming with fish, rays, and sometimes turtles.
- Mount Tempest – Hike to the top of the world's highest coastal sand dune (285 m) for panoramic views across Moreton Bay and the island's blue lakes.
- Blue Lagoon – Swim in the crystal-clear, freshwater lake surrounded by white sand and paperbark trees – a perfect spot for a refreshing dip.
- Moreton Island National Park – Explore diverse landscapes from heathlands and eucalypt forests to coastal dunes and beaches; keep an eye out for whales (June–November) and sea eagles.
- Dolphin Feeding at Tangalooma – At dusk, wild bottlenose dolphins swim right to the shore at Tangalooma Island Resort – a magical, up-close encounter.
- 4WD Adventures – Since there are no sealed roads, hire a 4WD to explore the island's sandy tracks, including the famous 'Desert' for sandboarding.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a day trip (10–12 hours) to snorkel the wrecks, climb Mount Tempest, and enjoy the lagoon. However, to truly immerse yourself, stay 2–3 days: camp at one of the national park sites or book a room at Tangalooma Resort. This lets you experience sunset at the wrecks, morning wildlife walks, and the island's peaceful night skies without rushing.
