Montague Island

Montague Island, a windswept nature reserve off the NSW South Coast, is a sanctuary for seabirds, seals, and ancient lighthouse history. Accessible only by guided tour from Narooma, this granite outcrop offers an intimate encounter with wild Australia — think thousands of muttonbirds wheeling overhead, Australian fur seals lounging on the rocks, and a beautifully restored 1881 lighthouse that feels like a step back in time. The island's isolation and raw beauty make it a must for wildlife lovers and photographers.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors do a half-day tour (4–5 hours) from Narooma, which includes boat transfer, a guided walk, and time for snorkelling. For the full experience, book an overnight stay in the lighthouse keeper's cottage — you'll have the island to yourself after day-trippers leave, with sunset penguin viewing and stargazing. A full-day trip is possible but overnight is far more rewarding.
