Montague Island Nature Reserve

Just off the coast from Narooma, Montague Island Nature Reserve rises from the Tasman Sea like a wildlife-packed sanctuary. This windswept granite island is a haven for seabirds, fur seals, and migrating whales, offering one of NSW's most immersive nature experiences. Accessible only by boat, the island feels wonderfully remote—a place where you can walk among thousands of little penguins, watch seals bask on the rocks, and feel the raw energy of the ocean.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors come on a half-day guided tour (about 4–5 hours), which includes a boat transfer and a walk around the island. For a deeper experience, book an overnight stay in the lighthouse keepers' quarters—this allows you to see the penguin parade at dusk and dawn, and to explore the island at a leisurely pace. If you're short on time, a day trip from Narooma is still very rewarding, but note that access is strictly controlled to protect wildlife, so you must join an authorised tour.
