Mon Repos Turtle Centre, on the coast near Bundaberg, is one of Australia's most important marine turtle rookeries. From November to March, you can witness endangered loggerhead turtles (and occasionally flatback and green turtles) laying eggs or tiny hatchlings scrambling to the sea. The centre offers ranger-led tours after dark, combining conservation storytelling with intimate wildlife encounters. It's a bucket-list experience for nature lovers and families alike.
Highlights & What to See
- Ranger-guided turtle tours – Nightly in season, these small-group walks take you to nesting sites where you can observe turtles laying eggs or hatchlings emerging. Rangers share insights into turtle biology and conservation.
- Interpretive centre – Interactive displays and a 3D cinema provide year-round context about turtle life cycles and the local ecosystem, even if you miss nesting season.
- Mon Repos Beach – By day, this quiet stretch of sand is perfect for a stroll or swim (be aware of seasonal turtle closures).
- Bundaberg Rum Distillery – A 15-minute drive away, this iconic distillery offers tours and tastings – a classic Queensland experience.
