The Darling River Run is an epic outback road trip that follows the winding Darling River through the red-dirt heart of New South Wales. Starting near Bourke and stretching down to the Murray River at Wentworth, this journey offers a raw, immersive experience of Australia's inland landscapes: ancient river red gums, vast floodplains, and tiny historic towns that seem frozen in time. This is a trip for those who crave solitude, wide-open skies, and the authentic pulse of the bush.
Highlights & What to See
- Bourke: Kick off at this frontier town on the banks of the Darling. Visit the historic wharf and the Back O' Bourke exhibition to understand the river's role in opening the interior.
- Louth: A classic outback pub stop – the Louth Pub is a character-filled landmark where you can grab a cold beer and hear local yarns.
- Tilpa: Another iconic pub town with a quirky corrugated-iron interior; the Tilpa Hotel is famous for its 'wall of signatures' and friendly atmosphere.
- Wilcannia: Once a bustling river port, now a heritage town with grand 19th-century buildings like the Athenaeum and the gaol. The river views from the main bridge are superb.
- Menindee: Gateway to the Menindee Lakes system, a vital wetland that attracts abundant birdlife. The Menindee Weir is a good spot for fishing and picnicking.
- Kinchega National Park: Just south of Menindee, this park protects the river and lakes. Explore historic woolshed ruins, spot kangaroos at sunset, and camp under a blanket of stars.
- Pooncarie: A tiny settlement with a beautiful old pub and a ferry crossing that feels like stepping back in time.
- Wentworth: The grand finale where the Darling meets the Murray. The Old Wentworth Gaol and the Perry Sandhills are must-sees, and the junction itself is a powerful sight.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least 5 to 7 days to do the full run from Bourke to Wentworth, including side trips to national parks and lakes. If you're short on time, a 3-day blitz from Bourke to Menindee covers the most iconic stops. The road is mostly unsealed and can be rough after rain, so drive a high-clearance 4WD and check conditions before setting out. Plan to camp or stay in pub accommodation; book ahead in peak season (April–October).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Broken Hill: The living museum of the outback, with its Silver City vibe, galleries, and the Living Desert sculptures – an easy detour from the run's midpoint.
- Mungo National Park: A World Heritage site with the dramatic Walls of China lunette and ancient Indigenous history. Accessible from the southern end of the run near Wentworth.
- Murray River National Park: Continue your river adventure into South Australia or explore the Murray's lower reaches from Wentworth.
- Mildura: A vibrant regional city on the Murray with wineries, citrus groves, and paddle-steamer cruises – a great place to end your trip.
- White Cliffs: Famous for its opal mines and underground houses, about a 2-hour drive from Wilcannia. A quirky side trip for gem hunters.
