Stretching from the lush hinterland of the Great Dividing Range to the golden beaches of the Pacific, Manning Valley is a serene slice of New South Wales that feels delightfully off the beaten path. The Manning River meanders through the heart of the valley, offering a landscape of dairy farms, rainforest pockets, and sleepy riverside villages. This is a place where you can slow down, paddle a canoe past grazing cattle, and watch the sunset paint the sky over the ocean. For international travellers, it’s an authentic taste of rural Australian life, combined with easy access to stunning coastal scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- Manning River: The lifeblood of the valley – kayak, paddleboat or cruise its placid waters, spotting pelicans and black swans along the banks. Join a sunset river cruise for a glass of local wine as the colours change.
- Old Bar Beach: A long, uncrowded stretch of sand perfect for long walks, swimming, and watching the resident kangaroos hop along the dunes at dawn and dusk.
- Booti Booti National Park: A coastal gem with dramatic headlands, pristine beaches and a coastal walk that connects Seven Mile Beach with the park’s lighthouse – incredible whale-watching from June to November.
- Wingham Brush Nature Reserve: A rare remnant of lowland subtropical rainforest with a boardwalk that winds among giant fig trees, flying foxes, and birdlife. Visit at dusk for a spectacular flying-fox exodus.
- Taree: The valley’s main town, with a lively farmers’ market on Saturday mornings, heritage buildings, and the Manning Entertainment Centre for local theatre and music.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to soak up the valley’s relaxed rhythm. Spend the first day exploring the river and Taree, the second on the coast between Old Bar and Booti Booti, and the third venturing into the hinterland for rainforest walks and a taste of country hospitality. If you’re self-driving, the valley makes for a perfect two-night stop between Sydney and Byron Bay, or as a peaceful detour from the Pacific Highway.
