Just a 20-minute ferry ride from Townsville, Magnetic Island is a laid-back tropical paradise where wallabies hop along sun-drenched beaches and koalas snooze in the treetops. With its rugged granite boulders, fringing reefs, and a network of walking trails, 'Maggie' (as locals call it) offers a perfect blend of nature and relaxation. The island's relaxed vibe makes it an ideal escape for a day trip or a longer stay, with plenty of opportunities for snorkelling, hiking, and wildlife spotting.
Highlights & What to See
- Forts Walk – A 4km return hike through melaleuca forest to historic WWII gun emplacements, with panoramic views over the island and mainland. Keep an eye out for koalas along the trail.
- Horseshoe Bay – The main hub for swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. The calm, turquoise waters are perfect for a dip, and the esplanade is lined with casual cafes and fish-and-chip shops.
- Alma Bay & Geoffrey Bay – Two stunning coves with sheltered swimming spots and rock pools. Geoffrey Bay is also home to a shipwreck (the SS Yongala) that's popular with divers.
- Koala Park – A small sanctuary where you can see koalas up close and learn about their conservation. The park also has kangaroos, wallabies, and reptiles.
- Magnetic Island National Park – Covering more than half the island, this park protects diverse habitats from eucalypt forests to mangroves. The 4.5km Nelly Bay to Arcadia track is a great way to explore.
Suggested Time to Spend
While Magnetic Island can be visited on a day trip, spending one or two nights allows you to experience its laid-back atmosphere and explore the walking trails and beaches at a relaxed pace. A day trip from Townsville (departing early morning and returning late afternoon) gives you enough time for a hike, snorkel, and lunch at Horseshoe Bay. For a more immersive stay, book accommodation in Arcadia or Horseshoe Bay and enjoy sunset drinks by the water.
