Macleay Valley

Macleay Valley is a lush, river-carved landscape on the NSW Mid-North Coast, where the Macleay River winds through verdant farmland, rainforest pockets, and past historic villages before emptying into the sea at South West Rocks. This is a place of slow-paced charm, where you can paddle a canoe beneath towering paperbarks, explore convict-era ruins, and feast on oysters plucked straight from the river. It's an ideal detour for travellers driving the Pacific Highway who want to trade highway hum for river murmurs.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two days is ideal: spend the first exploring Kempsey and the lower river (kayaking or a short cruise), then overnight in South West Rocks. On day two, visit Trial Bay Gaol in the morning and head to Hat Head National Park for a coastal walk before continuing north or south. If you're tight on time, even a half-day stop to see the gaol and grab a feed of oysters is worthwhile.
