Macleay Valley Way
Winding through lush farmland and past sleepy country towns, the Macleay Valley Way is one of the North Coast’s most scenic drives. This 130-kilometre route between Kempsey and Armidale offers a quintessential slice of rural New South Wales, with rolling green hills, historic pubs, and a pace of life that feels a world away from the coast. It’s a perfect detour for self-drive travellers wanting to explore the hinterland’s character.
Highlights & What to See
- Kempsey – The gateway to the valley, with a handsome main street, the Macleay River, and the excellent Slim Dusty Centre celebrating Australia’s country music icon.
- Bellbrook – A tiny historic village with a beautiful old wooden church and a classic country pub; stop for a cold drink on the verandah.
- Willawarrin – Known for its grand fig tree and the historic Willawarrin Hotel, a great spot for a counter lunch.
- Georges Creek – A scenic picnic area beside a cascading creek, perfect for a leg-stretch among towering eucalypts.
- Armidale – The end of the drive, a sophisticated highland city with grand Victorian architecture, excellent museums, and a thriving café scene.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least half a day (4–5 hours) for the drive itself, plus extra time for stops. The full Macleay Valley Way can be comfortably done in a day if you set off early, but overnighting in Armidale lets you explore the New England Tableland’s galleries and gardens. For a more leisurely pace, break the journey with a night in Kempsey or a stay at a farmstay along the route.
