Macleay Valley Coast

Stretching from the mouth of the Macleay River north to the pristine beaches of Hat Head National Park, the Macleay Valley Coast is a blissfully uncrowded stretch of northern NSW coastline. Here, sleepy seaside villages, riverfront boardwalks, and wild, windswept beaches offer a genuine escape from the tourist trail. The region's heart is the historic river town of Kempsey, but the real draw is the coast itself: a string of sandy coves, headland lookouts, and lush coastal forests that invite slow exploration by foot, bike, or car.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days is ideal to experience the Macleay Valley Coast without rushing. Spend your first day exploring South West Rocks and Trial Bay Gaol, then dedicate a full day to walking and beach-hopping in Hat Head National Park. A third morning could be spent on a river cruise or discovering Kempsey's heritage. The region is compact enough to use as a relaxed stopover on a Sydney-to-Brisbane road trip, or as a peaceful base for a longer coastal holiday.
